Music Magazine Evaluation

FRANK.

I based my music magazine on Vogue and NME, I really like how Vogues front cover is very simple and plain. I used different fonts and changed it to make it my own but kept the simple white background for my front cover, contents and one page of my double spread. I used NME to base what I wrote in my magazine not the look. Most of the bands featured in NME are Indi bands so I based my artist on an Indi artist who is a bit wacky and individual. A lot of the bands used in NME are fun and bubbly unlike other celebrities when fame goes to their heads.

The audience my magazine is pacifically aimed at is teenaged girls. Vogue is a very popular magazine with fashionable girls, this is the audience I am aiming for teenaged girls who are into fashion and music. Being a teenager myself and from my questionnaire I new what my audience would want to buy in a magazine. To attract my target group I dress my music artist model in clothes that would attract a teenage girl, something they might think about wearing themselves. Also the simple colours would attract them, maybe not as much as a bright magazine but I know from Vogue that a lot of people like the way the magazine looks and does attract people to buy it. The language I used was also really easy to read and came across as fun which is what everyone wants to read, nobody would want to read something that drags on especially teenagers. The artist I choice to create was down to earth and a good role model for teenaged girls, someone who doesn’t do drugs but is out to have a good time in a good way. Her music inspires people, and she enjoys what she does but doesn’t let it go to her head taking advantage of people and treating them in a bad way. I tried to create someone who is a lot like the teenagers my magazine are. With a lot of magazine music or fashion a lot of the artist or models are very skinny, the model I chose to use isn’t big but isn’t stick thin either she keeps herself in shape in a healthy way.

I think both fashion and music was involved in my magazine I think I targeted my audience well and from feedback a lot of my friends would want to buy my magazine if it was for sale in a shop. The photo’s I used, colours and language would defiantly attract my target audience. If I had made the whole of my magazine I would have designed it as a thick magazine like Vogue, there would be more interviews with artists who I know my audience are into. I think my magazine was more aimed at girls but I think a few boys wouldn’t mind reading it. Having someone their age on the front cover on the magazine would attract them as well as they might look up to that person and feel like if that person is doing what they have always wanted to do then there is no reason why they can’t. I think it is also good to have someone who is a good role model, not into drugs or anything which will enlighten other teenagers.

IPC media is the publisher of NME a lot of their magazines are aimed at teenaged boys and men “lad mags”. I think if they where looking for a girls magazine they might want to publish my magazine as it is a lot like NME with everything inside, but it’s a female version. It includes everything a teenaged girl would want to read in a music fashion magazine.

From making my magazine I have learnt how to use Photoshop and how to take a good photo. I’m not yet a pro at Photoshop but I did enjoy using it being it a lot easier then paint, there are so many things on the program and a lot of help. Learning how to take a good photo was helpful. I don’t think anyone would buy a magazine without a good thought about photo inside or on the front cover. Every magazine is full of them from adverts to reviews; it just adds that professional look to the magazine and also with a good edit if needed.

Comparing to my other magazine I made earlier in the term, I think I have improved a lot. Before I didn’t really know how to use Photoshop and I didn’t really plan what I wanted to do. I have thought a lot about the layout of this magazine and I think it shows. I based my magazine on other existing magazines which made it easier to think of ideas and make it look good. I don’t think either of my magazines looks exactly like other magazines. Comparing both of my magazines the audience I was aiming for are totally different. My first one appealed to teenaged boys and Frank. is aimed at teenaged girls. I found it a lot easier writing and designing for girls as I know what they want and I know whether I would want to buy my magazine or not. I didn’t want my magazine to look to cluttered I wanted to keep it simple and neat which I think I for filled. Everything in my magazine is clean cut and neatly placed, I don’t think anything looks out of place and everything is where it is meant to be.

I really enjoyed making and designing this magazine and liked learning how to use Photoshop even though I still need a bit of help on it.

Music Magazine Brief

The music magazine I will be designing and making the front cover, contents and double page spread of will be aimed at teenaged girls from the age of 15 and above. The design of the magazine will be simple but effective. From other magazines I have looked at I like the way Vogue sets out the front cover. I like the plain background with a focus image, this focus image will be a band I decide to choose. The magazine looks sophisticated and un-cluttered, I want my audience to get all the information they need but not too much. In the magazine will be thing they will defiantly be interested in, from my questionnaire most girls I asked like gossip magazines so I can add gossip about celebrities but keep it in within the music business, the gossip wont always relate to music but will also be about an artist/band. I can also put fashion into my magazine by comparing outfits that music artists have warn to what is in the high street shops which are affordable to my audience.
